Understanding the hidden traps along the golf course

To a golfer, a golf course is full of challenging possibilities like the mysterious lush green cover with its hidden breaks and the ever-challenging sand traps.

Sand traps:

Sand trap is a term used for addressing a bunker filled with sand. It is more popularly known as a bunker trap. Bunkers are mostly holes that are filled with sand. Bunkers are found in different shapes, sizes and depths. They are found on the green fields, though finding them alongside fairways is not uncommon. Bunkers are hollowed out area or depression where soil and grass is removed and then replaced with sand or other similar materials. Bunkers should however not be confused with a grass trap where a hole is filled with soil or deeper shades of grass. Such grass traps also do not qualify as bunkers under the official rules of the game.

Challenges and hints:

The very mention of sand traps is enough to disturb the mental peace of even the most professional players. To novices, sand bunkers are even more challenging and intimidating. The best of plans can go haywire because of such hidden traps on the golf course. There are certain ways in which these bunkers can be dealt with. Players have to take a wider stance when dealing with such traps. The open clubface helps as well, as it enables players for lofting up the ball easily. While aiming for shots it is necessary to avoid taking too much or too little sand. Taking too much sand makes the job very heavy and difficult. By taking too little sand, the ball is hit first and then the sand. this move can make you miss the target completely. The best way therefore to deal with such situations is to apply the follow through approach where the sand directly behind the ball is hit first. The ball is then easily removed from the trap with a good swing in the bargain.

Hidden traps are challenging, but with skill and practice one can understand such traps and deal with them effectively.
