Clearing your mind before you begin the game

A good game of golf requires intense concentration and control. Distractions whether physical or mental can deter the players from doing justice to their skill and practice.

Mental distractions:

Golf is also called as the mental game. However, mental distractions can play havoc in your game. Different types of mental distractions like extreme negative anxiety or personal issues can lurk at the back of any player’s mind. Clearing your mind before taking the field is therefore essential. There are different ways in which players can relax before the game. Players can even enlist the help of coaches or friends to help them maintain inner peace before the game.

Clearing the mind:

The first thing one needs to do is to identify the distractions accurately. You can then begin with simple relaxation exercises. Positive self talk at this point is also very effective. The best way to clear your mind is by opening it to the enjoyable aspect of the game. Look upon each game as an enjoyable task rather than a ‘must win situation’ that players always pressurize themselves to be in. Avoid negative thoughts, and if they persist in coming, then it is better to talk yourself out of them either by dealing with them thoroughly on the spot, or ignoring them completely. Not all mental thoughts are distracting. You can substitute the disturbing scenes by indulging fully in positive imagery. You can for instance imagine yourself to be on a beach or any other relaxing location just before taking the centerfield. Your mind will feel positively relaxed and on all accounts your body will feel fresh and ready for action. Some players also prefer to read a book or simply chat with their friends to avoid unnecessary thoughts and resulting anxiety. However, anxiety can come in full swing just as they are about to stroke the ball. It is necessary to make conscious and deliberate efforts to clear the mind before beginning any game.

By clearing the mind, players can relax and aim for those perfect shots without any reserves.
