Being relaxed and calm before the game

Unlike some other games where aggression matters a lot, golf requires more calmness of mind than anything else. Staying relaxed before the game is therefore very necessary.

Why it matters?

A relaxed and calm mind has the ability to make good decisions, plan out tactics, and face virtually any untoward situation with relative ease. Golf is a thinking game where your mindset can either help you score a difficult shot or miss a relatively easy one. Relaxation simply means enabling the mind to stay focused on the game and face situations with a positive outlook.

Tips and tricks:

The process of calming and relaxing the mind can be a long one or a short one depending upon each individual’s unique personality. Naturally cool individuals can stay calm easily, while slightly anxious individuals take more time. Before standing over the ball, you can do Stretching exercises, as they are great in not only loosening you up physically but also in getting you into the playing zone mentally. The best way to set your mind at ease is by enjoying yourself as much as possible. Negative self-talk is especially harmful and highly effective in ruffling up your spirits. Instead, you can indulge in positive self-talk by having a sporting attitude towards the outcome whether you win or lose. If you have some doubts about the field or the game, it is best to clear those immediately as brooding too much can affect your concentration drastically. Deep breathing exercises along with soothing imagery are also very effective. It is sometimes necessary to approach each game with a completely different mindset. Like, Some players face each situation with a ‘do or die outlook’ while others prefer to look upon the match as a pastime hobby. The way you choose to view the situation plays a major role in how quickly you can calm down and relax or how quickly you can blow it all.

By relaxing yourself before the game, you give yourself an opportunity not only to succeed but also learn from, and enjoy each outcome.
